John Cena bows out after loss to Gunther in retirement match at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event

John Cena’s storied WWE career came to a close on Sunday after the 17-time world champion lost to Gunther in his retirement match at Saturday Night’s Main Event. The bout, held before a sold-out crowd in Washington, marked the final in-ring appearance of one of professional wrestling’s most influential figures.

The match delivered a fitting finale. Cena and Gunther traded momentum in a hard-hitting contest that showcased both experience and intensity. Cena drew loud reactions as he delivered an Attitude Adjustment through a table and followed it up with another from the second rope. Gunther responded with his trademark physicality, wearing Cena down with repeated chops before locking in a sleeper hold. After a prolonged struggle, Cena tapped out, bringing the match—and his WWE career—to an official end.

As the bell rang, Cena acknowledged the audience with a bow before exiting the ring to sustained applause. Moments later, WWE turned the spotlight fully on his legacy. World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk and Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes led several superstars to the ring, presenting their championship titles to Cena in a symbolic tribute.

WWE also aired a video montage featuring messages from Cena’s family, colleagues and rivals, along with highlights from his childhood and more than two decades in the company. In a final symbolic gesture, Cena removed his wristbands and sneakers, leaving them in the ring before walking up the aisle for the last time.

Cena debuted in WWE on June 27, 2002, famously answering Kurt Angle’s open challenge. Over the years, the West Newbury native became the face of the company, known equally for his in-ring achievements and microphone work. He finishes his career with 17 world championships, five United States titles, four tag team reigns, two Royal Rumble victories and an Intercontinental Championship.

His final title reign came earlier this year at WrestleMania, where he defeated Cody Rhodes. With his retirement now official, Cena leaves behind a legacy that shaped an era of WWE and influenced generations of fans and performers alike.
