Lucknow Super Giants Set to Acquire Mohammed Shami in All-Cash Deal Ahead of IPL 2026

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are poised to bolster their pace attack with veteran India pacer Mohammed Shami, following a trade agreement with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). The deal, reportedly an all-cash arrangement worth ₹10 crore, mirrors the price at which SRH acquired Shami during the IPL 2025 mega auction. The final move, however, awaits Shami’s consent.
The trade comes amid LSG grappling with injuries to key bowlers. Avesh Khan, Mayank Yadav, and Mohsin Khan are all in rehabilitation, limiting the franchise’s fast-bowling options. Mayank underwent lower back surgery in June, Mohsin is recovering from an ACL tear sustained in December during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and Avesh continues treatment for a cartilage issue in his right knee. Shami’s inclusion is seen as a strategic measure to fill this gap and provide experience to LSG’s bowling lineup.
Shami’s recent IPL form has been underwhelming. In the 2025 season with SRH, he claimed just six wickets at an average of 56.17 and an economy rate of 11.23, significantly higher than his career averages of 28.19 and 8.63, respectively. Despite this, LSG’s management is betting on his experience and ability to perform under pressure, particularly in high-stakes matches.
The trade highlights the ongoing activity in the IPL player market ahead of the 2026 season, following moves such as Mumbai Indians securing Shardul Thakur and Sherfane Rutherford for ₹4.6 crore each. LSG’s proactive approach aims to address both depth and experience concerns, ensuring the team remains competitive despite current injury setbacks.
The official retention lists for all franchises are expected later today at 3 PM, which will confirm the status of the Shami transfer. Meanwhile, Shami’s decision to accept the move will be closely watched by fans and analysts, given his potential to significantly influence LSG’s fortunes next season.
