Former domestic cricket star Mithun Manhas has been elected unopposed as the 37th President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The announcement came during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Mumbai on Sunday. Manhas, originally from Jammu and Kashmir, steps into one of the most powerful roles in world cricket, succeeding a long line of influential administrators.
Alongside this major appointment, former India cricketers RP Singh and Pragyan Ojha have been named in the BCCI’s national selection committee. Rajeev Shukla has been re-elected as vice president, while Devajit Saikia continues as Honorary Secretary. Prabhtej Singh Bhatia has taken charge as joint secretary.
In women’s cricket, former India star Amita Sharma has been appointed as chairperson of the selection committee, joined by Sulakshana Naik (Mumbai) and Shravanti Naidu (Hyderabad). S Sharath, meanwhile, has been named chairman of the junior selection panel.
The AGM also introduced a crucial decision: U16 players will not be allowed to participate in the IPL unless they have played at least one Ranji Trophy match for their state team. This move is aimed at strengthening domestic cricket and ensuring young players gain first-class experience before entering the lucrative league.
Mithun Manhas, who captained Delhi’s Ranji team to a title win in 2007–08, also had stints in the IPL with Delhi Daredevils, Pune Warriors India, and Chennai Super Kings. Post-retirement, he contributed as a coach with franchises like RCB, Punjab Kings, and Gujarat Titans, and later served as Director of Cricket Operations at JKCA.
His elevation as BCCI President marks a new chapter, expected to shape Indian cricket’s future both domestically and globally.
