New Zealand Name ODI Squad for West Indies Tour, England Prepare Special Plans for Vaibhav Suryavanshi

New Zealand Cricket on Wednesday announced its squad for the upcoming ODI series against the West Indies, with uncapped fast bowler Matt Fisher earning his maiden call-up to the national team.

The five-match series is scheduled to begin on July 11 in the Caribbean and will mark another important assignment for New Zealand’s white-ball side as preparations continue for future international tournaments.

Mitchell Santner will continue to lead the team in the ODI format. The squad features a mix of experienced campaigners and emerging players, with selectors opting to give opportunities to several fringe cricketers while resting some key fast bowlers.

The biggest talking point from the squad announcement was the inclusion of 26-year-old pacer Matt Fisher. The right-arm seamer has impressed in domestic cricket and will now have the opportunity to make his international debut during the tour.

Fast bowler Jacob Duffy has also returned to the ODI setup after featuring in New Zealand’s T20 World Cup campaign. The pace attack will additionally include Kristian Clarke, Ben Sears and Nathan Smith.

In the spin department, captain Santner will be supported by Michael Bracewell, Jaden Lennox and Dean Foxcroft. Tom Latham is set to take over wicketkeeping responsibilities, while the batting unit includes Will Young, Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls, Mark Chapman and Nick Kelly.

Several senior players have been left out of the tour. Kyle Jamieson, Matt Henry and Will O’Rourke have been rested as part of workload management plans. Meanwhile, Blair Tickner remains unavailable following ankle surgery.

Devon Conway will also miss the West Indies tour. The left-handed batter has been granted time away from cricket following the birth of his second child during New Zealand’s Test series in England.

New Zealand Squad: Mitchell Santner (captain), Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Kristian Clarke, Jacob Duffy, Matt Fisher, Dean Foxcroft, Mitch Hay, Nick Kelly, Tom Latham, Jaden Lennox, Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls, Ben Sears, Nathan Smith and Will Young.

Meanwhile, ahead of the opening T20I between India and England, England vice-captain Harry Brook revealed that the team has undertaken detailed preparation to counter teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi.

The 15-year-old left-hander remains the centre of attention before the series opener, with uncertainty continuing over whether he will make his international debut in the first match.

Speaking before the game, Brook said England’s coaching and analytical staff had closely studied Suryavanshi’s batting approach and developed plans to restrict his impact if he gets an opportunity to play.

According to Brook, significant work has gone on behind the scenes to identify areas where England can challenge the youngster and prevent him from playing freely. His comments underline the level of attention Suryavanshi has already attracted despite not yet making his international debut.

The teenager has emerged as one of Indian cricket’s most exciting prospects after a breakthrough domestic and franchise season. His aggressive strokeplay and fearless approach have made him one of the most discussed young cricketers in the country.

India begin their five-match T20I series against England at Chester-le-Street, where weather conditions and team selection remain major talking points. While England have publicly acknowledged their preparations for Suryavanshi, the final decision on his inclusion will rest with the Indian team management.

As anticipation builds around the series opener, all eyes will be on the team sheet to see whether one of Indian cricket’s brightest young talents gets the opportunity to make his international debut.
