Nitish Reddy Recalled to Indian Test Squad Ahead of Second Test Against South Africa

All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy has been prematurely recalled to the Indian Test squad ahead of the second Test against South Africa, set to begin in Guwahati on November 22. Reddy will participate in the team’s optional practice session at Eden Gardens on November 18, a day earlier than initially scheduled.
Reddy had originally been included in the two-match Test series but was released to participate in India A’s series against South Africa A before the first Test. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had indicated that he would rejoin the senior squad for the second Test, but his early return now allows him to prepare with the main team.
The first Test at Eden Gardens ended in a 30-run defeat for India in just two and a half days, concluding on November 16 instead of the scheduled November 18. South Africa posted 159 and 153 in their innings, while India managed 189 and 93, highlighting the team’s batting struggles.
Reddy’s return is timely as captain Shubman Gill’s participation remains in doubt due to a lingering neck injury. The management may need additional batting cover, and Reddy offers a balance with his right-handed batting, complementing the existing left-right combinations in the squad. Alternatives like Devdutt Padikkal and Sai Sudharsan are both left-handers, which could create matchup challenges.
In India A matches against South Africa A, Reddy scored 37 runs and took 1/18 in the first game but did not feature in the second match. He will miss the third India A match scheduled for November 19 due to his recall.
With the second Test in Guwahati marking India’s first match at the venue, the team will be keen to bounce back and level the series 1-1. Nitish Reddy’s inclusion provides the squad with additional flexibility in the batting order and all-round options, which could prove crucial in India’s pursuit of a comeback.
