Rajasthan Royals’ Playoff Hopes Still Alive, But Every Match is Now a Final
Sports Desk
The Rajasthan Royals have had a disappointing run in IPL 2025 so far, losing 6 out of their 8 matches and slipping to 8th place on the points table. Yet, despite the setbacks, Sanju Samson’s men still have a faint glimmer of hope — but to keep it alive, they must treat every remaining game as a do-or-die encounter.
Royals Lag Behind in the Points Table
After playing eight matches this season, Rajasthan Royals have managed just two wins, collecting 4 points with a net run rate of -0.633. It’s one of the franchise’s most challenging campaigns in recent years. However, mathematically, their journey isn’t over yet.
Six Games Left — All Must-Wins
While the road ahead is undoubtedly steep, it's not impossible. If the Royals manage to win all six of their remaining matches, they could finish the league stage with 16 points — typically enough to secure a playoff berth. But it’s not just about winning — they’ll need to win big. Improving their net run rate (NRR) is equally crucial.
Net Run Rate Could Be the Deciding Factor
Currently, Gujarat Titans, Delhi Capitals, and Punjab Kings each have 10 points and are strong playoff contenders. If Rajasthan manages to catch up on points, their playoff fate could be determined by NRR. Hence, dominant victories are not just desirable — they are necessary.
Narrow Losses Have Cost the Royals Dearly
Rajasthan's current standing could have been very different had they capitalized on tight games. Against Delhi Capitals, they failed to chase 9 runs in the final over and eventually lost in the Super Over. In another nail-biting clash with Lucknow Super Giants, they needed 9 off the last over again, but Avesh Khan’s disciplined bowling dashed their hopes. Had these two matches swung in their favor, the road to the playoffs would’ve looked much clearer.
Leadership Questions Surround Sanju Samson
Amid the team's struggles, questions are being raised about Sanju Samson’s captaincy. In his absence early in the season, Riyan Parag had stepped in as stand-in skipper. However, even after Samson’s return, the team hasn't shown significant improvement — raising concerns about leadership decisions during crunch moments.
