Ravichandran Ashwin signs for Sydney Thunder, Becomes First Indian Male Star to play in BBL

Ravichandran Ashwin has created history by becoming the first male Indian international cricketer to sign with a Big Bash League franchise. The veteran off-spinner officially joined Sydney Thunder on Thursday for the upcoming BBL 15 season, marking a landmark moment in Australian T20 cricket.

Historic Move After IPL Retirement

The 39-year-old's participation became possible after he announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League on August 27, 2025, following his earlier international cricket retirement during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in December 2024. BCCI regulations strictly prohibit active Indian players from participating in overseas T20 leagues, making retirement the only path for participation.

Ashwin will be available for the second half of the BBL season, which runs from December 14, 2024, to January 25, 2025. His ILT20 commitments in the UAE from December 2 to January 4 mean he will miss the initial three weeks of the tournament.

Sydney Thunder's Major Coup

Thunder General Manager Trent Copeland described the signing as "arguably the biggest signing in BBL history". The franchise secured Ashwin after Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg personally reached out to gauge his interest. Multiple clubs including Hobart Hurricanes, Sydney Sixers, and Adelaide Strikers also pursued the Indian legend.

Ashwin expressed his excitement about joining the team, stating, "Thunder were crystal clear about how they'd use me and brave enough to back it. My conversations with the leadership were excellent, and we're fully aligned on my role. I love how Dave Warner plays the game, and it's always better when your leader shares your mindset".

Career Credentials and Team Impact

With 765 international wickets in 287 matches for India and 187 IPL wickets across 221 games, Ashwin brings immense experience to Thunder's spin-heavy squad. His IPL economy rate of 7.20 demonstrates the control he provides during crucial middle overs, which could significantly enhance Thunder's title aspirations after their runner-up finish in BBL 14.

The Thunder squad already features international talent including David Warner, Lockie Ferguson, Sam Billings, and Pakistan's Shadab Khan. Under BBL rules, only three overseas players can feature in the starting XI, giving Warner tactical flexibility.

Hong Kong Sixes Appearance

Before his BBL debut, Ashwin will represent India in the Hong Kong Sixes tournament scheduled for November 7-9, 2025. The six-over format competition will feature 12 teams at the Tin Kwong Road Recreation Ground in Hong Kong.

Ashwin's groundbreaking move opens new possibilities for retired Indian cricketers in global T20 leagues, following similar paths taken by players like Dinesh Karthik, who recently played in South Africa's SA20. His presence is expected to boost BBL's popularity among Australia's significant Indian diaspora while adding world-class talent to an already competitive tournament.
