RCB Go Top Of IPL 2026 Table, KKR’s Playoff Hopes In Trouble

Bengaluru move to No.1 after beating Kolkata, while Punjab face must-win clash against Mumbai tonight.

The playoff race in IPL 2026 has become even more intense as Royal Challengers Bengaluru climbed to the top of the points table after defeating Kolkata Knight Riders by six wickets on Wednesday. With just 13 league-stage matches remaining in the tournament, the battle for the top four spots is heating up dramatically, while the defeat has pushed Kolkata into a difficult situation.

So far, Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants have officially been knocked out of the playoff race. The remaining eight teams are still mathematically alive and fighting for qualification. Every match from this stage onward is likely to have a direct impact on the playoff picture.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s victory over KKR not only strengthened their chances but also helped them secure the number one position in the standings. Both RCB and Gujarat Titans now have 16 points each, but Bengaluru moved ahead because of their superior net run rate of +1.053, currently the best in the tournament.

Virat Kohli’s brilliant unbeaten century against Kolkata proved crucial in helping Bengaluru secure the win. The team now needs just one more victory from its remaining two matches to officially confirm a playoff berth. RCB will next face Punjab Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad, and even one win from those fixtures should be enough to take them into the knockout stage.

Gujarat Titans are also in a strong position. Like Bengaluru, Gujarat have 16 points and need only one more win to confirm qualification. Their remaining matches are against Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings. Gujarat’s consistent performances throughout the season, combined with a solid net run rate, have placed them among the favorites for a top-two finish.

The biggest setback of the latest round came for Kolkata Knight Riders. After four consecutive victories, the team suffered a crucial defeat against Bengaluru, severely affecting its playoff hopes. Kolkata currently have 9 points from 11 matches and sit in eighth position on the table. With only three league games remaining, KKR now face a must-win situation.

To stay alive in the tournament, Kolkata will likely need to win all their remaining matches. The challenge, however, is far from easy, as they are scheduled to play against Gujarat Titans, Mumbai Indians, and Delhi Capitals. Even if they manage to win all three games, their qualification may still depend on net run rate and results from other teams.

Punjab Kings are another team under pressure. After suffering four consecutive defeats, Punjab have slipped to fourth position with 13 points. The team now faces a crucial match against Mumbai Indians, where a loss could seriously damage its playoff hopes.

Punjab still have matches remaining against Bengaluru and Lucknow after the Mumbai clash. If they manage to win two out of their remaining three games, qualification will almost certainly be secured. However, continued inconsistency has become a major concern for the franchise at a critical stage of the season.

Sunrisers Hyderabad remain in contention but are also under pressure after their heavy 82-run defeat to Gujarat Titans. Hyderabad currently have 14 points and a net run rate of +0.331. To guarantee playoff qualification, they will need victories against Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their remaining matches.

The race has also become interesting because of Chennai Super Kings’ late resurgence. After a disappointing start to the campaign, CSK have bounced back strongly and are now riding a three-match winning streak. The team currently holds fifth place with 12 points and still has a realistic chance of qualifying.

However, Chennai’s path is extremely difficult. The team must win all three of its remaining matches to have a strong chance of reaching the playoffs. CSK are scheduled to face Lucknow Super Giants, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Gujarat Titans in their final league games.

Rajasthan Royals also remain alive in the competition with 12 points, though their recent form has been disappointing. Rajasthan have lost five of their last seven matches, which has weakened their position significantly. Their remaining matches are against Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants, and Mumbai Indians. To stay in the race, Rajasthan cannot afford further slip-ups.

Delhi Capitals, meanwhile, face perhaps the toughest challenge among all the contenders. The team has only 10 points from 12 matches and the worst net run rate in the tournament at -0.993. Delhi must win both of their remaining matches by large margins and will also need favorable results from other teams to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Apart from the playoff battle, the race for individual awards has also intensified. Virat Kohli moved to third place in the Orange Cap standings after his unbeaten century against Kolkata. Kohli now has 484 runs from 12 matches this season.

Sunrisers Hyderabad batter Heinrich Klaasen currently leads the Orange Cap race with 508 runs, while Gujarat Titans opener Sai Sudharsan occupies second place with 501 runs. With several league matches still remaining, the battle for the top run-scorer title remains wide open.

In the bowling department, Royal Challengers Bengaluru pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar continues to hold the Purple Cap. The experienced fast bowler has taken 22 wickets in 12 matches and has played a key role in RCB’s successful campaign this season.

Gujarat Titans pacer Kagiso Rabada is second on the list with 21 wickets, while Chennai Super Kings bowler Anshul Kamboj is third with 19 wickets.

As IPL 2026 enters its final phase, the competition is becoming tighter with every passing game. While Bengaluru and Gujarat are close to securing playoff spots, teams like Kolkata, Punjab, Chennai, Rajasthan, and Hyderabad still have plenty to fight for. With several direct clashes still to come, the next few days are expected to decide the final shape of the IPL 2026 playoffs.
