Smriti Mandhana etched her name in cricket history by scoring the fastest century by an Indian in ODI cricket, surpassing Virat Kohli’s 52-ball record with a stunning 50-ball ton at Arun Jaitley Stadium. Despite her heroics, India Women fell short by 43 runs in a record-breaking 781-run match against Australia Women, who clinched the series 2-1.
Mandhana’s explosive 125 off 60 balls, including a century in just 50 balls, broke her own previous record of a 70-ball ton in Women’s ODIs, making it the second-fastest century in the format, trailing only Meg Lanning’s 45-ball feat. Partnering with skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (52), Mandhana powered India to 200 in just 20 overs while chasing Australia’s mammoth 412/10 in 47.5 overs. However, Harmanpreet’s injury after the 20th over and her dismissal in the 21st disrupted India’s momentum. Mandhana fell soon after, attempting a six, leaving India at 231/5. The hosts were eventually bowled out for 369, despite a valiant effort.
Australia’s innings was powered by Beth Mooney’s 138 off 75 balls, including a 57-ball century the third-fastest in Women’s ODIs. Georgia Voll (81) and Ellyse Perry (68) also played crucial roles, with century partnerships propelling Australia to 412, the first 400+ total against India in Women’s ODIs. Arundhati Reddy (3/86), Deepti Sharma (2 wickets), and Renuka Thakur (2 wickets) led India’s bowling but couldn’t contain Australia’s aggressive batting.
The match set a new benchmark with 781 runs scored, surpassing previous high-scoring encounters. Australia’s 412 equaled their record for the highest ODI total, previously set against Denmark in 1997. Despite India’s series-leveling win in Mullanpur, Australia’s dominance in the decider secured the series.
Mandhana’s record-breaking performance, eclipsing Kohli’s 2013 mark, cements her status as one of India’s finest batters. However, Australia’s depth, led by Mooney’s brilliance, proved too strong. This thrilling encounter showcased the growing intensity of Women’s ODI cricket, leaving fans eager for more.
