South Africa’s Strong Comeback in WTC Final with Help from Weather
Captain Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram’s brilliant innings have powered South Africa’s solid comeback against Australia in the World Test Championship final—although favorable weather played a crucial role.
By the end of Day 3 on Friday, South Africa, chasing a target of 282 runs, had scored 213 runs for the loss of 2 wickets. They now need just 69 more runs to win. Aiden Markram remained unbeaten on 102 and captain Temba Bavuma on 65. Together, they have built an unbeaten 143-run partnership off 232 balls for the third wicket. Ryan Rickelton scored 6 runs and Wiaan Mulder added 27 before both were dismissed by Mitchell Starc.
Australia had resumed their second innings at 144/8 and were bowled out for 207 by lunch. Mitchell Starc remained unbeaten on 58, Alex Carey scored 43, and Marnus Labuschagne added 22 runs. Kagiso Rabada took 4 wickets and Lungi Ngidi claimed 3.
In the first innings at Lord’s in London, Australia had scored 212 and South Africa managed only 138, giving Australia a 74-run lead.
How Weather Favored the South African Batters
During the first two days, London’s skies were overcast with strong winds, leading to more swing for the bowlers. On Day 3, however, the sun came out, reducing swing and making batting significantly easier.
