Supreme Court refuses to cancel India-Pakistan Asia Cup Clash: 'Match Should Go On'

The Supreme Court on Thursday declined to urgently hear a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking cancellation of the high-profile India-Pakistan cricket match scheduled for September 14 in Dubai as part of the Asia Cup 2025 tournament.

A bench comprising Justices JK Maheshwari and Vijay Bishnoi categorically rejected the request for urgent listing, with Justice Maheshwari remarking, "What is the urgency? It's a match, let it be". When the counsel pressed for Friday listing citing Sunday's match schedule, the judge firmly stated, "Match is this Sunday? What can we do about that? Let it be. Match should go on".

The PIL was filed by four law students led by Urvashi Jain through advocates Sneha Rani, Abhishek Verma, and Md. Anas Chaudhary. The petition argued that holding the cricket match so soon after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025, where 26 tourists were killed, and the subsequent Operation Sindoor military response, undermines national dignity and public sentiment.

The petitioners contended that "cricket cannot be placed above national interest, the lives of citizens, or the sacrifices of armed personnel". They claimed that playing Pakistan while soldiers sacrifice their lives sends "the opposite message that while our soldiers risk everything, we are celebrating sports with the same country sheltering terrorists".

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia defended the fixture, stating the board follows central government policy which permits participation in multinational tournaments with countries not on friendly terms with India, while bilateral series remain prohibited. The revised August policy allows Indian athletes to compete in multinational events but bars bilateral engagements with hostile nations.

Despite the legal challenge, the much-anticipated clash between cricket's biggest rivals will proceed as scheduled at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on September 14, 2025.
