The Gabba Test: Australia Take 44-Run Lead on Day 2 with Half-Centuries from Smith, Weatherald, and Labuschagne

Australia strengthened their hold on the Gabba Test against England on Day 2, ending the day at 6-378 with a 44-run lead and four wickets remaining. Steve Smith, Jake Weatherald, and Marnus Labuschagne played commanding innings, while England’s Brydon Carse picked up three crucial wickets.

After England’s Joe Root starred with a century on Day 1, the visitors hoped to maintain momentum. However, Australia dominated large parts of the second day, exploiting England’s lapses in the field and inconsistent bowling. The tourists dropped five catches, giving Australian batters multiple reprieves. Jamie Smith missed Travis Head at 3, Ben Duckett spilled a simple chance off Alex Carey’s first ball, and Root failed to hold onto Carey on 25.

Australia capitalised on these errors, maintaining a scoring rate of over five runs per over. Weatherald set the tone with a brisk 72, Labuschagne contributed 65, and Smith reached a well-crafted half-century, keeping Australia in control.

England fought back late in the day. Stokes introduced a short-ball strategy, which, combined with Carse’s persistence, led to the dismissals of Cameron Green for 45 and Steve Smith via a spectacular catch by Will Jacks. Despite this fightback, Carey remained unbeaten on 46, forging a crucial 49-run partnership with Michael Neser (15*), ensuring Australia ended the day with a comfortable advantage.

With Stokes struggling with cramps and England’s bowlers showing signs of fatigue, the tourists face pressure heading into Day 3. Former Australian opener Mark Waugh highlighted the need for a strong response from England on Saturday to keep their Test hopes alive.

Australia will look to extend their lead and press for a dominant position, while England must overcome fielding errors and bowling inconsistencies to mount a comeback in the series.
