India’s Sujeet created history at the Under-23 Senior World Wrestling Championships in Serbia by winning the country’s first gold medal of the tournament in the 65 kg freestyle category.
The young wrestler, who had to settle for bronze in the previous edition, showcased exceptional skill and dominance throughout the competition.
Sujeet, already a two-time Asian U23 champion (2022 and 2025), overpowered his Uzbek opponent in the final, securing a 10–0 victory by technical superiority. His commanding performance left no room for doubt, as he cruised to the top of the podium with complete control.
Earlier in the competition, Sujeet defeated Moldova’s Fiodor Chevadar 12–2 in the opening round, followed by an impressive 11–0 technical win over Poland’s Dominik Jakob in the second. In the quarterfinals, he overcame a tough challenge from Bashir Magomedov with a narrow 4–2 win and later edged out Japan’s Yuto Nishiyuchi 3–2 in the semifinals to book his place in the gold medal bout.
While Sujeet’s gold marked the highlight for the men’s contingent, two other Indian male wrestlers fell short in their bronze medal matches.
On the other hand, the Indian women’s wrestling team delivered an extraordinary overall performance — winning five bronze and two silver medals to emerge as overall team champions of the event, reaffirming India’s growing dominance on the world stage.
