Teenage Sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi Smashes Historic IPL Sixes Record
Rajasthan Royals opener becomes the first Indian to hit 50 sixes in a single season after a blistering 93-run knock against Lucknow Super Giants.
A Record Breaking Tuesday
The Sawai Mansingh Stadium witnessed history on Tuesday evening as 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi dismantled the Lucknow Super Giants bowling attack, becoming the first Indian cricketer to hit 50 sixes in a single Indian Premier League season. Chasing a massive target of 220 runs in a crucial match, the young opener single-handedly shifted the momentum in favour of Rajasthan Royals with a devastating display of power hitting.
Suryavanshi started the match with 43 sixes to his name this season. By the time he walked back to the dugout after scoring 93 off just 38 deliveries, he had taken his tally to 53. The historic 50th maximum came off pace spearhead Mayank Yadav in the 11th over of the chase, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
Chasing Down True Greatness
The young left-hander's explosive innings included 7 boundaries and 10 massive sixes, bringing him within striking distance of Chris Gayle's long-standing all-time record. The West Indian legend had smashed 59 sixes for Royal Challengers Bengaluru during the 2012 edition. Prior to Suryavanshi’s feat on Tuesday, Andre Russell was the only other player to cross the 50-sixes mark in a single season, clearing the ropes 52 times in 2016.
"We just told him to play his natural game," a source close to the team management said after the match. "At his age, you don't want to burden him with numbers, but what he is doing out there is pure instinct and brilliant hand-eye coordination."
Rewriting T20 Cricket History
This is not the first time the teenage prodigy has rewritten the record books in the ongoing IPL 2026 tournament. Earlier this season, Suryavanshi smashed 12 sixes against Sunrisers Hyderabad during an unforgettable 103-run knock off 37 balls, setting the record for the most sixes by an Indian in a single IPL match.
Local coaches who have watched his transition from age-group cricket to the biggest T20 league in the world point out that his back-foot punch and clean swing are unusually mature for a 15-year-old. He currently holds the Orange Cap with 579 runs across 13 matches, anchoring the Rajasthan Royals batting lineup.
Chipping Away at Gayle's Milestone
With Rajasthan Royals securing a vital win and keeping their playoff hopes alive, Suryavanshi will have at least one more league match, and potentially the knockout stages, to overtake Gayle's milestone of 59 sixes. The milestone hit against LSG came immediately after he had dispatched Yadav over long-off, following it up with a monstrous hit over midwicket to complete his half-century of maximums.
Initial reports from the ground suggest that national selectors are keeping a very close eye on his development, though the immediate focus remains on letting the youngster enjoy his historic run in domestic franchise cricket.
