Vaishali Leads FIDE Women's Candidates After Round 11 Win

R Vaishali defeats Aleksandra Goryachkina in Round 11 of FIDE Candidates 2026, taking a full-point lead. Sindarov holds firm in the Open as Pragg draws Bluebaum.

Vaishali Moves Closer to FIDE Women's Candidates Title with Round 11 Win

Indian GM defeats Goryachkina to take a full-point lead; Sindarov retains commanding advantage in Open section with three rounds remaining.

Vaishali Takes the Lead

R Vaishali strengthened her grip on the FIDE Women's Candidates Tournament 2026 with a crucial Round 11 victory over Aleksandra Goryachkina in Paphos, Cyprus, on Saturday. Playing with the black pieces, Vaishali capitalised on a blunder by Goryachkina that left the Russian's rook trapped, eventually forcing her to concede the game.

The win pushed Vaishali to 7 points from 11 games, giving her a full-point lead over joint second-placed Zhu Jiner and Anna Muzychuk, both on 6 points. With three rounds remaining, the Chennai-born grandmaster is now the clear favourite to earn the Women's World Championship challenge.

A Tactical Masterclass

The key moment came in the middlegame when Goryachkina played Bc4, a move with some strategic merit but a critical tactical flaw — it blocked the rook's own escape route. Vaishali spotted the idea immediately, and Goryachkina was eventually forced to sacrifice the exchange with Rxc6. Vaishali converted the resulting endgame.

The lowest seed's lead grew to a full point after second-placed Zhu Jiner and Anna Muzychuk were held to draws by Kateryna Lagno and Divya Deshmukh respectively.

Divya Deshmukh Holds Her Ground

India's other representative in the Women's section, Divya Deshmukh, put in a resilient showing against Zhu Jiner. Divya secured a draw with the black pieces against Zhu Jiner in her Round 11 match.

The result keeps Divya in the middle of the standings with 5 points. While a title challenge appears out of reach at this stage, the young Indian has shown considerable grit against some of the world's top women players throughout the tournament.

Sindarov Survives Caruana's Best

In the Open section, Javokhir Sindarov of Uzbekistan came under sustained pressure from Fabiano Caruana but managed to hold the draw and preserve his commanding lead. Sindarov himself said the game against Caruana was "the toughest game of this tournament," adding that Caruana was "outplaying me" and that he had probably played "one of the best defensive games of my life."

With three rounds to go, Sindarov holds a clear two-point lead over Anish Giri, who drew his game against Andrey Esipenko in Round 11.

Praggnanandhaa Misses Winning Chance

R Praggnanandhaa came agonisingly close to being the sole winner in the Open section on Saturday. Praggnanandhaa missed some opportunities in a clearly winning position against Matthias Bluebaum, and the game eventually ended in a draw.

Bluebaum's draw was his tenth of the tournament. The result leaves Praggnanandhaa on 4.5 points — a disappointing tally for one of India's most celebrated young talents, though the experience at this level remains invaluable.

Round 11 At a Glance

The 11th round produced just one decisive result across eight games in both sections. In the Open, all four games ended in draws — Nakamura and Wei Yi played a quick draw, while Giri versus Esipenko was solid but uneventful. The Women's section was similarly quiet, except for Vaishali's decisive win.

The tournament is being held at the Cap St Georges Hotel and Resort in Paphos, Cyprus, which FIDE selected as the host venue for this prestigious event.

What Comes Next

Round 12 could prove critical in the Women's section, as Vaishali is set to face one of her two closest rivals with the white pieces. A win would be a huge step toward overall victory; a loss could throw the standings wide open.

In the Open section, Sindarov faces Nakamura in Round 12 — his stiffest remaining test. The winner of the tournament earns the right to challenge reigning World Chess Champion Gukesh Dommaraju. With the finish line in sight, both Vaishali and Sindarov will be keen to hold their nerve.
