Balodabazar Extortion Scandal: Labour Inspector Ramcharan Kaushik Suspended Over Diwali Shakedown

In a swift crackdown on corruption, Balodabazar Collector Deepak Soni has suspended Labour Inspector Ramcharan Kaushik with immediate effect following allegations of extorting money from local traders ahead of Diwali.

The action stems from complaints that surfaced on October 25, 2025, when shopkeepers reported officials from the Labour Department demanding cash under the pretext of issuing Gumastha licences and forming women’s harassment redressal committees. The issue gained traction through media reports and direct grievances to the district administration.

Responding promptly, Collector Soni formed a three-member inquiry committee comprising the Balodabazar SDM (chairperson), Chief Municipal Officer, and Assistant Labour Officer. The panel submitted its preliminary report within 48 hours, confirming Kaushik’s involvement in the alleged illegal collections.

Acting on the findings, Chhattisgarh Labour Commissioner invoked Rule 9 of the Chhattisgarh Civil Services (Classification, Control & Appeal) Rules, 1966, to suspend the inspector. During suspension, Kaushik will receive only subsistence allowance and has been attached to the Labour Commissioner’s office in Nava Raipur Atal Nagar.

Collector Soni stated, “Any form of illegal extortion by officials is not just corruption it dents public trust in governance. Zero tolerance will be maintained to ensure transparency and accountability.”

The incident unfolded amid Diwali festivities, with traders alleging door-to-door demands by labour officials. The rapid investigation and suspension have been hailed as a strong message against bureaucratic malpractice.

Further departmental proceedings against Kaushik are underway. Authorities urge citizens to report similar incidents directly to ensure clean administration.
