Amid rising global tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran, fertiliser supply concerns have resurfaced ahead of the Kharif season, with farmers demanding adequate stock and strict action against black marketing. The issue has gained urgency as sowing preparations begin across several states.

Farmer leader Tejram Vidrohi said timely availability of fertilisers at affordable rates is critical to avoid disruptions during the upcoming agricultural cycle. He stressed that authorities must plan in advance based on expected cultivation areas.

Demand for Adequate Stock

Farmers have urged the government to ensure sufficient fertiliser reserves before the start of the Kharif season. According to Vidrohi, officials already have estimates of the area under cultivation and should prepare stock accordingly.

He pointed out that delays in supply or shortage during peak demand can severely impact crop productivity and farmer incomes. Ensuring smooth distribution, he said, should be a priority.

Global Tensions Impact Supply

The concerns come against the backdrop of ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia. According to agriculture stakeholders, any disruption in global supply chains could affect fertiliser imports, leading to shortages in domestic markets.

The Congress party has also raised the issue, demanding that the government release a white paper on fertiliser availability. Party leaders alleged that there is a gap between official claims and ground-level preparedness.

State Congress communication department chief Sushil Anand Shukla said the government must disclose data on demand, supply, and current stock levels to ensure transparency.

Allegations of Shortage

The opposition claimed that during the previous Kharif season, farmers faced a severe shortage of fertilisers. As per party estimates, against a requirement of around 4.5 lakh metric tonnes, only about 80,000 metric tonnes were supplied in the initial months.

This gap, they said, forced farmers to queue for urea, DAP, and potash, affecting timely sowing operations.

Black Marketing Issues

Congress leaders also alleged that shortages led to black marketing, with middlemen selling fertilisers at prices three to four times higher than regulated rates. Farmers, left with limited options, were compelled to purchase at inflated prices.

The party warned that if similar conditions arise this year, accountability must be fixed on the authorities concerned.

Call for Accountability

The opposition has sought clear answers from Agriculture Minister Ramvichar Netam regarding total fertiliser demand for the current year and the stock prepared so far. It has urged the government to prioritise concrete action instead of political statements.

Farm groups have echoed this demand, calling for strict monitoring mechanisms to curb hoarding and ensure fair distribution.
