Repair work on Kumhari bridge triggers major traffic diversion; police rehearsal exposes gaps in signage and lighting along alternate routes
Bridge Closes at 10:30 PM Tonight
The Kharun River bridge at Kumhari in Bhilai — a critical link on the Durg-Raipur highway — will be closed to all traffic from tonight at 10:30 PM as repair and maintenance work gets underway. The closure, which comes into effect from April 1, will remain in force through April 30, blocking one of the busiest inter-city corridors in Chhattisgarh for a full month.
Thousands of commuters travelling daily between Raipur and Durg will be forced to use alternate routes throughout this period, according to officials.
Rehearsal Exposes Ground-Level Gaps
Ahead of the actual closure, the district police and administration conducted a traffic diversion rehearsal on Monday evening. The drill, originally scheduled between 9 AM and 12 PM, was pushed to a 5 PM–8 PM window — coinciding with peak office-return hours — which worsened the situation on the ground.
As vehicles were redirected through unfamiliar alternate routes, long tailbacks formed on the Raipur-to-Durg stretch. Motorists reported being stuck in slow-moving queues for extended periods, with many struggling to reach home on time.
Darkness and Missing Signboards Add to Chaos
The rehearsal brought several shortcomings to light. Poor illumination at key diversion points left drivers unable to read the road ahead, according to sources present during the trial run. Adequate directional signboards were found missing at multiple junctions, leaving commuters confused about which lane to take and where each alternate route led.
Shelter tents for deployed personnel were also insufficient in number. As per reports, the combination of sudden route changes and incomplete preparedness placed the maximum burden on ordinary commuters.
SSP Arrives on Spot, Orders Immediate Fixes
Durg SSP Vijay Agrawal personally visited the diversion sites to oversee the rehearsal. He inspected the traffic management arrangements closely, with officers from both Durg and Raipur districts stationed at various control points attempting to regulate vehicle movement.
On observing the gaps, the SSP issued on-the-spot instructions to officers to revise and strengthen the traffic plan before the bridge officially shuts. "The public should face no inconvenience," he directed, according to officials present.
55 Personnel Deployed Across Diversion Points
Durg Police has deployed 55 personnel across the diversion network to manage traffic through the closure period. Authorities have indicated that the strength will be scaled up if vehicle pressure on alternate roads increases beyond manageable levels.
Separate routes have been designated for heavy vehicles such as trucks and buses, medium-sized transport, and smaller vehicles including cars and two-wheelers — a measure aimed at reducing bottlenecks at key intersections.
Shortcomings to Be Addressed Before Tonight
Police officials stated that the rehearsal was specifically designed to identify operational weaknesses before the actual closure began. As per the administration, all flagged issues — including road lighting, directional signboards, and personnel deployment — will be rectified before 10:30 PM tonight.
Authorities have appealed to commuters to factor in additional travel time during their daily journeys over the next month, keeping in mind the altered road conditions and diversions now in place.
What Commuters Can Expect
The month-long Kharun River bridge closure is set to significantly alter daily travel patterns for residents of Durg, Bhilai, and Raipur. While the administration has assured that all corrective measures will be in place by tonight, the rehearsal underscored that large-scale traffic diversion on a busy inter-city corridor demands more than a single trial run.
With 55 personnel on ground and a revised traffic plan being drawn up, authorities are working against a tight deadline to ensure that this India news update from Chhattisgarh does not turn into a prolonged commuter crisis.
