A post-funeral feast in a Chhattisgarh village has ended in tragedy, with five people, including a two-month-old infant, losing their lives to suspected food poisoning. The incident has cast a pall over Dunga village in the state's Narayanpur district.
The unfortunate event occurred after villagers attended the feast on October 14. Officials reported that the victims began suffering from severe vomiting and diarrhoea shortly after consuming the food. Within a week, between October 14 and October 20, five individuals succumbed to their illnesses.
The deceased have been identified as a two-month-old baby, Budhari (25), Budharam (24), Lakkhe (45), and Urmila (25). The Narayanpur district administration was alerted to the deaths on October 21.
Acting swiftly on the directives of Collector Pratishtha Mamgai, a medical team was dispatched to the remote village. The team, comprising Chief Medical and Health Officers (CMHO) from Narayanpur and Bijapur districts, along with the local Block Medical Officer, set up a health camp to treat the affected residents.
During their examination of 25 villagers, health officials found 20 people suffering from vomiting and diarrhoea. Two residents were diagnosed with malaria, and three with other illnesses. A 60-year-old woman was admitted to the Bhairamgarh community health centre for further treatment.
Narayanpur CMHO T R Kunwar stated that the health team is currently stationed in the village to provide continuous care. Authorities have advised all residents to consume only fresh food and drink boiled water as a precautionary measure while the situation is brought under control.
