Police in Jagdalpur seized 53.17 kg of ganja worth approximately ₹5.40 lakh on Friday and arrested 37-year-old Rafi Sheikh, who had smuggled the consignment from Odisha into Bastar. The arrest was made near the Aadavall checkpost under Bodhghat police station limits, following a tip-off from an informant.
Officials received information early Friday that a man on a motorcycle (registration number OR 10 D 6439) was heading toward Aadavall from Nagarnar and was carrying a large quantity of ganja in two sacks. Acting on the alert, police teams rushed to the location and set up an immediate checkpost, inspecting every vehicle passing through.
How the smuggler was caught
After some time, the motorcycle matching the informant’s description arrived at the checkpost. Police stopped the vehicle and questioned the rider, who identified himself as Rafi Sheikh. When officers searched the two sacks he was carrying, they recovered the large consignment of ganja.
Sheikh was arrested on the spot and taken to the police station, where a case was registered against him under the NDPS Act.
Ganja trafficking confirmed; accused sent to jail
According to police, Sheikh had set out from Odisha with the intention of supplying ganja in Bastar. Although he managed to cross the state border, he was intercepted during the intensified checking.
ASP Maheshwar Nag stated that the accused was produced before a court, which remanded him to judicial custody. He added that surveillance along the border areas has been strengthened to curb such smuggling attempts.
Police remain vigilant amid rising illegal activities
This operation comes at a time when illegal activities have been on the rise in the Bastar region. Police say several attempts of ganja smuggling from Odisha have been foiled recently, and continuous search operations and checking drives are being conducted to prevent further incidents.
