The group reportedly used a planned method to attract the squirrels by placing food in specific areas of trees and forest grounds. Once the animals gathered, they were targeted using slingshots, resulting in the death of nine squirrels.
After the hunt, the animals were taken back to the village where the accused and his associates allegedly prepared them for consumption.
Social Media Activity Leads to Exposure
The case took a significant turn when the accused uploaded a video on Instagram. The reel showed the aftermath of the hunting activity and was edited with a popular song associated with a local figure. The video quickly spread across social media platforms, drawing the attention of forest officials in Dantewada.
Using digital tracking methods, the forest department traced the accused’s account, obtained contact details, and identified his location.
Forest Department Action and Arrest
Following the viral video, a coordinated team led by senior forest officials launched an immediate investigation. The department managed to locate the suspect in an interior village area of the Barsoor region. He was subsequently detained for questioning and later taken into custody.
During interrogation, the accused reportedly admitted to the act and provided details of the hunting method used in the forest.
Search for Other Involved Individuals
Authorities have revealed that the arrested individual was not alone in the act. At least ten other people are suspected to have been involved in the poaching incident. Their identities have reportedly been identified, and search operations are currently underway to apprehend them.
Officials have stated that strict legal action will be taken against all those involved under applicable wildlife protection laws.
