Amit Baghel Arrested Near Police Station in Raipur; Supporters Block GE Road for Hours
Chhattisgarh Kranti Sena (CKS) state president Amit Baghel was arrested by Devendra Nagar police on Saturday, just 20 meters short of the police station where he had intended to surrender. Following the arrest, Baghel was produced in court and sent to three days of police remand. Prior to custody, he will be allowed to attend his mother’s funeral in his native village Pathri, scheduled for Saturday.
Baghel’s supporters staged a protest on GE Road in Amapara, blocking traffic for over three hours. The roadblock created difficulties for commuters and emergency vehicles, though police coordinated with demonstrators to allow ambulances through.
The arrest relates to multiple FIRs filed against Baghel across five states. He had been absconding for the past 26 days. On November 26, the Supreme Court had dismissed his anticipatory bail plea, warning him to refrain from making provocative statements and to comply with legal proceedings. Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai had earlier condemned Baghel’s remarks against various communities, which had led to several FIRs.
Baghel’s controversial statements trace back to October 27, following damage to the Chhattisgarh Mahatari statue at VIP Chowk on October 26. The incident sparked protests from the Agarwal and Sindhi communities across the state. Baghel had also made remarks about religious figures, escalating tensions. The statue, depicting the maternal figure in traditional Chhattisgarhi attire, symbolizing agriculture, knowledge, and prosperity, was later reinstated.
During the arrest operation, a significant police force was deployed at Devendra Nagar police station and Azad Chowk. Baghel’s supporters gathered in large numbers, demanding his surrender and protesting the detention.
Baghel is accused under multiple cases of making inflammatory statements and disturbing public order. With his arrest, authorities aim to ensure compliance with the law while maintaining public safety. The case continues to attract attention due to Baghel’s political influence and the communal sensitivity surrounding his remarks.
