Anganwadi Worker Killed in Balod; Accused Dies by Suicide Inside Centre After Attack

A 54-year-old anganwadi worker was allegedly murdered inside a childcare centre by a man recently released on bail in a rape case, who later died by suicide at the same location, police said. The incident occurred Thursday afternoon in a village under Deori Police Station limits in Balod district.

The deceased, Ugeshwari Devangan, was attacked with a knife by Lakhan Devangan, 57, who allegedly assaulted her inside the anganwadi premises before hanging himself from a ceiling fan, investigators said. Police reached the scene after villagers reported screams from the centre and found both individuals dead.

According to preliminary findings, the accused had been arrested earlier this year following a complaint by the victim alleging sexual exploitation under the pretext of marriage. He was released on bail on February 3. Officials suspect the attack may have been motivated by resentment over the case, though they said the exact sequence of events is still under investigation.

Police said the two had known each other for years and were reportedly in a relationship. On the day of the incident, the man arrived at the anganwadi centre around 1 p.m. While several children were present nearby, he allegedly asked the helper to take them outside before locking the door from inside. Moments later, witnesses heard cries for help and alerted villagers.

By the time residents gathered and informed authorities, the assault had already taken place. Officers forced open the door and recovered the bodies. Both were sent for post-mortem examination, and forensic teams documented evidence from the scene.

Station in-charge Rakesh Thakur said a detailed investigation is underway. “Initial inquiry indicates the victim had filed a complaint against the accused last month, after which he was jailed. He obtained bail recently. We are examining all angles, including motive and timeline,” he said.

Residents reported that the victim had moved temporarily to her brother’s home earlier due to tensions but continued her duties at the centre. Authorities are also recording statements from family members and villagers to reconstruct events.

Police said further action will depend on forensic findings and witness accounts. Officials added that security protocols at childcare facilities may be reviewed to prevent similar incidents.
