Assistant Teacher Assaulted After Intervening in Dispute at Family Event in Durg

An assistant teacher was allegedly assaulted by a group of youths in Durg district after he intervened to stop a fight during a family function, police said on Monday. The incident occurred in the Supela police station area, where the victim sustained multiple injuries and later filed a formal complaint, prompting an investigation.

The victim, Sanjay Singh Kushwaha (35), an assistant teacher posted at a government school in Titurdih, was attending a chhathi (childbirth ritual) programme in village M Jamgaon on January 25. According to the complaint, a group of youths began arguing during the event, creating a disturbance. Kushwaha intervened in an attempt to defuse the situation and calm both sides.

Police said the immediate dispute appeared to subside at the venue. However, the matter resurfaced later that night after Kushwaha returned to Bhilai with friends. Around 11 pm, while he was standing with acquaintances near Sanjay Nagar ground, behind Lohia Petrol Pump in Supela, three youths allegedly confronted him.

The accused have been identified as Rohit Sahu alias Padum, Ajay Joshi and Shekhar Nirmalkar. According to Kushwaha’s statement, the trio accused him of “interfering too much” at the family function and began hurling abuses. When he objected, they allegedly assaulted him collectively, punching and kicking him and issuing threats.

Kushwaha suffered injuries near his right eye, teeth, shoulder, ear, mouth and lower back. He was later given medical treatment, and his condition was stated to be stable. Friends who were present at the scene — identified as Pintu Lahri, Govind Sonwani and Virendra Bambhole — intervened and managed to stop the assault, police said.

Supela police confirmed that a case has been registered based on the teacher’s complaint. “The matter is under investigation. Statements of witnesses are being recorded and appropriate legal action will be taken against the accused,” a police official said, adding that the seriousness of the injuries will be factored into further proceedings.

The incident has drawn attention to rising instances of violence during social gatherings and the risks faced by individuals who attempt to mediate disputes. Education department sources said Kushwaha is a regular government school teacher with no prior criminal history.

Police have urged citizens to report disputes promptly and avoid confrontation where possible, while reiterating that those resorting to violence will face strict action under the law.
