Bihar minister and Chhattisgarh BJP in-charge Nitin Nabin has been appointed the Bharatiya Janata Party’s national working president, making him the youngest leader to hold the position. The decision was taken by the BJP parliamentary board and announced on Sunday by national general secretary Arun Singh.
Nabin, 45, will hold the post until the election of a new national president. BJP president J.P. Nadda, who was appointed in 2020, completed his term in 2024 and has since been continuing with an extension while also serving as Union health minister.
Thanking the party’s central leadership, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior ministers, Nabin said the responsibility was an honour and pledged to take forward the organisation under the Prime Minister’s guidance and leadership.
Nabin is widely credited with playing a key role in restoring the BJP to power in Chhattisgarh and strengthening the organisation in the state. He currently serves as the party’s state in-charge and is seen as a key link between the central leadership and state units. His appointment is being viewed as part of the party’s effort to reinforce organisational coordination and sharpen its electoral machinery.
The Congress, however, sought to attach a political reading to the move. Party communication department chief Sushil Anand Shukla congratulated Nabin but said the appointment reflected internal dynamics within the BJP. He claimed that the day a full-time national president is appointed, dissent could surface against what he described as the party’s “authoritarian approach”.
Senior BJP leaders in Chhattisgarh welcomed the decision. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and state BJP president Kiran Dev said Nabin’s leadership would inspire the organisation and workers, calling his elevation a sign of the party’s confidence in young leadership. Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao said the appointment was a matter of pride for the Chhattisgarh BJP, noting the party’s electoral successes under Nabin’s guidance. Home Minister Vijay Sharma said his leadership had energised the cadre across elections, from the Assembly to local bodies.
A five-time MLA from Patna’s Bankipur constituency, Nabin is the son of veteran BJP leader Nabin Kishore Sinha. He has also served as national general secretary of the BJP Yuva Morcha and was appointed Chhattisgarh BJP co-incharge in 2023. If he is eventually named national president, Nabin would become the youngest person to hold the post.
