Bhilai Steel Plant Worker Seriously Injured in Accident; Case Filed Against Management and Contractor

In a serious workplace safety incident, a contract worker at Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) was critically injured after falling from a damaged electricity pole while working without proper safety equipment. The Durg police have registered a case against the plant’s management and the contractor under Sections 289 and 125(B) of BNS for negligence and endangering worker safety.

The victim, Lalit Kumar Chandrakar, a resident of Chandkhuri village, has been working as a contract electrical worker in BSP township for nearly 12 years. According to his complaint, the incident occurred on September 3, 2025, around 4 PM, near Sector-06 Jagdamba Mandir, when he was instructed by contractor Shankar Dayal Singh to climb a bent and unstable channel pole without a helmet, safety belt, or boots.

Lalit refused to climb due to the unsafe condition, but alleges that he was forcibly made to ascend the pole. During the work, while the pole was being supported by a crane and ropes, Lalit slipped from a height of approximately 15 feet, sustaining serious fractures in his right arm, leg, and spine. He was first admitted to Sector-9 Hospital, Bhilai, before being referred to ESI Hospital and subsequently to Hi-Tech Hospital for specialized care.

The case names BSP officials Rajkishore, Dileep Rane, Tikendra Thakur, Ashok Sahu, Mahipal Deshmukh, and contractor Shankar Dayal Singh as accused. Lalit alleged that despite his severe injuries, the management discharged him prematurely, and no compensation or support was provided even four months after the incident. He reportedly spent around ₹1 lakh from his own pocket for treatment.

The worker also claimed that BSP officials pressured him not to file a case, and he faced abuse and threats when he insisted on lodging the complaint. The police have registered a formal case, and further investigation is underway to determine accountability and negligence.

Workplace Safety Concerns
This incident highlights the persistent challenges in enforcing industrial safety protocols in large plants. Experts note that contract workers often face hazardous conditions without adequate protective gear, exposing them to severe injuries. Authorities have emphasized strict adherence to occupational safety guidelines and immediate action in case of accidents.

The filing of this case may set a precedent for ensuring that industrial contractors and management are held accountable for workers’ safety in Chhattisgarh.
