The Bhilai Municipal Corporation’s Mayor-in-Council (MIC) has approved the privatization of the Zone-2 sports ground, assigning its operation, management, and maintenance to a private agency. The decision was taken during a key MIC meeting held on January 21, aimed at improving civic infrastructure and streamlining municipal services across the city.
The meeting was chaired by Mayor Neeraj Pal and attended by Additional Commissioner-cum-Secretary Rajendra Kumar Dohre, MIC members, and senior officials from various departments. Along with the sports ground decision, the council cleared several proposals related to land use, traffic management, road development, and waste management.
Under the approved plan, the Vaishali Nagar sports ground in Zone-2 will be handed over to a private or institutional body for better upkeep and professional management. Officials said the move is intended to enhance facilities, ensure regular maintenance, and make the ground more accessible for organized sports activities. The terms and conditions for the private operator are expected to be finalized through a transparent process.
Addressing long-pending land issues, the MIC revisited cases related to plots allotted on 30-year leases by the Special Area Development Authority. The council agreed to determine a lawful procedure for changes in land use, a decision expected to provide relief to plot holders whose applications have remained unresolved for years.
In a major step to tackle traffic congestion, the MIC also approved the auction of abandoned and illegally parked vehicles found along roadsides and public spaces. Municipal officials noted that unattended vehicles have been contributing to frequent traffic jams and safety concerns. The auction process will be carried out in accordance with prescribed norms to clear encroachments and improve road mobility.
The council further directed the preparation of fresh proposals to rent out community halls in Supela and Ghasidas Nagar, as well as vacant premises at the Shanti Nagar Dussehra ground. These proposals will be presented in the next MIC meeting for approval.
Several infrastructure projects were also cleared during the meeting. Road asphalt work was approved in Zone-3, including the stretch from the Baikunthdham welcome gate to the health office in Ward 31, and from Kishan Chowk to Pappu Chowk up to Pump House No. 1 in Ward 35. Officials said these projects will significantly improve commuting conditions for local residents.
In the sanitation sector, the MIC agreed to accelerate waste segregation and compost production at the SLRM center. Approval was also granted for the purchase of new resource vehicles under the 15th Finance Commission’s ‘Million Plus City’ scheme to strengthen the city’s waste management system.
Additionally, the council decided to place a proposal before the advisory committee to invite Expressions of Interest (EOI) for the operation of Gardens No. 1 to 4 located on G.E. Road in Nehru Nagar Ward-4. Matters related to service extension for regular and placement employees were also discussed.
