Former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel on Thursday criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the public release of documents linked to Jeffrey Epstein in the United States, alleging selective silence on an issue that has triggered international debate.
Addressing media persons in Bhilai, Baghel said the disclosure of Epstein-related documents by the US Department of Justice has caused a stir worldwide, but the BJP leadership in India has chosen not to respond. He questioned why the party, which had aggressively politicised issues such as The Kashmir Files and The Kerala Story, was refraining from commenting on what he described as a serious global matter.
Baghel alleged that discussions around the Epstein documents include references to several influential personalities internationally. Without presenting evidence, he claimed that the Prime Minister’s name was being mentioned in global conversations related to the disclosures and demanded a clear response from the BJP and the Union government.
“The Kashmir Files and the Kerala File were turned into political tools. Films were promoted and narratives were pushed aggressively. Now that the Epstein files have come out and the issue has international implications, the BJP leadership is completely silent,” Baghel said. He added that transparency and accountability were essential in a democracy, particularly when questions were being raised at a global level.
The Congress leader stated that the US Justice Department’s decision to make documents related to Epstein public has renewed scrutiny of the case, which involves allegations of sexual exploitation and connections with powerful individuals. He said the developments warranted a response from the Indian government to clarify its position and address public concerns.
Baghel further argued that selective outrage undermines democratic principles. “If the government believes in answering questions and upholding moral standards, it should respond on this issue as well,” he said, urging the Prime Minister to break his silence and provide clarity.
The Epstein case has resurfaced internationally following the release of court documents in the United States, leading to renewed public and media attention. While the disclosures have sparked debate across several countries, no official statement has been issued by the Indian government or the BJP in response to Baghel’s allegations.
Political observers note that the remarks are likely to intensify political sparring ahead of upcoming electoral battles, with opposition parties seeking to corner the ruling party on issues of transparency and accountability.
As of the time of publication, the BJP had not issued any official reaction to Baghel’s statements.
