Former Sarpanch Beheaded Over Land Dispute & Election Rivalry; In Another Case, Husband Kills Pregnant Wife Over Suspicions

Two murder incidents shocked Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur district in a single night. In one case, a former sarpanch was brutally killed with a sharp weapon due to an ongoing land dispute and election-related rivalry. In the second case, a man murdered his pregnant wife with an iron rod (sabbal) after repeatedly doubting her character. The incidents took place in the Sakri and Koni police station areas. Police are investigating both cases.

Former Sarpanch Found With Throat Slit

Manbodh Yadav, a resident of Chorbhatti village and a former sarpanch, had contested the previous election but lost. Following his defeat, he allegedly developed disputes with several villagers and was also engaged in a long-running land conflict with his neighbour.

On Wednesday night around 8 pm, Yadav left home on his scooter but never returned. His family began searching for him when he didn’t come back. The next morning, they received information that his body had been found in a pool of blood. Police reached the spot and detained a suspect. Sakri TI Vijay Chaudhary confirmed the accused has been arrested and is being interrogated.

Husband Kills Pregnant Wife Over Character Suspicion

The second incident occurred in the Koni area. Late Wednesday night, a man attacked his pregnant wife, Santoshi Kevat (30), with a sabbal following a heated argument and killed her on the spot. He fled after the attack but was later arrested by police.

Santoshi had been married for 6–7 years to Jitendra Kevat of Khapri, Takhpur. The couple had a five-year-old daughter. Due to Santoshi’s pregnancy, Jitendra had been living at his in-laws’ home in Lofandi for the past two months. Police say he frequently suspected his wife’s character, leading to frequent quarrels.

Daughter Witnessed the Murder

On the night of the incident, the couple and their daughter were sleeping in one room while the other family members slept separately. Around 12:30 am, an argument escalated into violence, and Jitendra struck his wife with the iron rod. Their five-year-old daughter woke up during the attack, saw her mother bleeding and her father fleeing, and ran out crying to alert her grandparents. The family rushed to the room and found Santoshi dead. They immediately informed the police, who launched a search and arrested the accused.
