Raipur, CG
In a shocking incident from Raipur, a man's body was exhumed from its grave using a JCB after his family identified him through his clothes and a tattoo on his wrist—days after police had already buried him as an unidentified accident victim.
The case is from Urla police station area, where, on the evening of June 26, an unidentified man was struck by a speeding vehicle on the Bypass Ring Road. The collision was so severe that the man died on the spot, and his body was badly mutilated.
Unable to identify the victim and with no family coming forward, police conducted a post-mortem and buried the body on the third day after the accident.
Identification Through Personal Clues
On June 28, a family arrived at Urla police station to file a missing person report. During the interaction, they were shown images and details of the deceased, including his clothing and a tattoo on his wrist. Based on these clues, they identified the victim as Dayanand Verma (26), a resident of Kailash Nagar, Urla.
Following the identification, executive magistrate approval was obtained, and the body was exhumed in the presence of officials. It was then handed over to the family for final rites.
The incident has raised questions around procedures for handling unidentified bodies, and has sparked discussions on delayed identification protocols in accident cases.
