The recovery of a man’s body from a canal in Bhilai-3 area on Tuesday morning triggered panic and concern among local residents, prompting an immediate police and forensic investigation. Preliminary findings suggest that the death may have occurred after the man accidentally slipped into the canal while intoxicated, though officials said the exact cause will be confirmed only after the post-mortem examination.
According to police, the incident came to light around 8 am when locals spotted a man lying face down in the water near the small culvert at Transport Nagar under the Bhilai-3 police station limits. Residents alerted the police, following which a team rushed to the spot and retrieved the body from the canal.
The area soon witnessed a large gathering as news of the recovery spread. Police secured the scene and initiated preliminary investigation procedures. Given the seriousness of the incident, a forensic team was also called in to examine the location and collect physical evidence that could help reconstruct the sequence of events.
Police later identified the deceased as Satish Prasad (44), a resident of Gautam Nagar in Khursipar. The body was sent to Supela Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination. Officers are also scanning CCTV footage from nearby establishments to determine how and when the man reached the canal and whether any other individuals were present at the time.
Bhilai-3 station in-charge Amber Singh said initial inquiries indicate that the deceased was habitual to alcohol consumption. “Family members and local sources have informed us that he often stepped out of his house under the influence of liquor and was found lying at different places,” Singh said. Based on available information, police suspect that Prasad may have slipped near the canal late Sunday night or early Monday morning while intoxicated and fell into the water, sustaining fatal injuries.
Police have, however, clarified that no external injury marks indicating foul play were found during the initial inspection. “At present, there is no indication of homicide. The case has been registered as a merg, and all angles are being examined,” the officer added.

Officials stressed that the post-mortem report will be crucial in determining the precise cause of death. Until then, investigators are keeping the inquiry open, relying on forensic inputs, medical findings, and electronic surveillance footage.
The incident has once again raised concerns over safety around open canals in industrial and residential zones, particularly during night hours. Police have urged residents to exercise caution and avoid isolated areas, especially under the influence of alcohol, while the investigation continues.
