Raipur rural police on Wednesday arrested an alleged cannabis smuggler during a surprise search operation in the Tilda–Nevra area of Raipur district, recovering a large consignment of narcotics, prohibited pills, weapons and cash. The accused has been identified as Madhu Mishra, who was reportedly active in drug trafficking across the rural pockets of the district.
According to police officials, the raid led to the seizure of 73 kilograms of cannabis valued at approximately ₹36 lakh, along with 790 banned narcotic tablets, a knife, a mobile phone and ₹1.87 lakh in cash from the accused’s residence. The operation was carried out as part of a targeted anti-narcotics drive initiated by the Raipur Rural Police.
The action was conducted on Wednesday following specific intelligence inputs about illegal drug storage and distribution from the location. Police teams conducted a surprise checking at Mishra’s house, where the contraband was allegedly concealed. The accused was taken into custody on the spot.
Senior police officials said the operation marks the first major action under the leadership of Raipur Rural Superintendent of Police Shweta Shrivastava Sinha, who recently assumed charge. “Strict action will continue against individuals involved in the sale and distribution of narcotics. This is part of a sustained crackdown on drug networks operating in rural areas,” a senior official said.
Police sources indicated that Raipur city has been administratively divided to strengthen law enforcement, with separate postings for the Police Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police. The rural policing responsibility currently lies with SP Sinha, under whose direction subordinate officers executed the operation.
Investigators are now examining the accused’s links to larger supply chains and interstate networks. Officials said further questioning may lead to additional arrests. Details of the case, including charges under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, are expected to be formally disclosed by Raipur Rural Police in the coming days.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to intensifying surveillance and conducting regular search operations to curb the spread of narcotics, particularly in semi-urban and rural belts. Police officials also urged citizens to report suspicious activities, assuring confidentiality and prompt action.
