Cash Stolen From Kali Mata Temple Donation Box in Durg; Thieves Target Notes, Leave Coins Behind

Unknown thieves broke into the donation box of the well-known Kali Mata Temple located on Nehru Bhavan Road under the Supela police station area in Durg district, making away with cash estimated to be in lakhs. The theft came to light on Monday morning when the temple priest arrived to open the shrine for routine prayers and found the donation box forcibly opened and empty.
According to the temple management, the donation box had remained sealed for nearly six years. Discussions had recently begun about opening it for counting and maintenance, but before any formal process could take place, the theft occurred. Preliminary estimates suggest that the box contained between ₹1.5 lakh and ₹2 lakh in cash.
Police said the thieves removed currency notes from the donation box while leaving behind most of the coins, indicating a targeted theft aimed at quickly portable cash. Some coins may also be missing, but an exact assessment will be possible only after a detailed inventory, officials said.
The temple priest told police that the shrine was closed around 8.30 pm on Sunday after evening rituals. The premises remain largely deserted at night, and investigators believe the theft took place during this window. A trident kept near the donation box was found displaced, suggesting forced access to the container.
Upon receiving information, Supela police reached the spot and conducted a preliminary inspection of the temple premises. Officers are examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area to trace the suspects and establish their route of entry and exit.
The incident has triggered concern among local residents and devotees, who described the theft as an attack on religious faith and a reflection of inadequate security at places of worship. Members of the temple committee have demanded swift action and stronger security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Police officials said a case has been registered and assured that efforts are underway to identify and arrest those responsible at the earliest.
