Central GST Raids Navin Engineering in Ambikapur; Large-Scale Tax Evasion Suspected

A Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) team conducted a raid on Navin Engineering, a major manufacturing unit located on MG Road in Ambikapur, the headquarters of Chhattisgarh’s Surguja division. The CGST team arrived from Raipur on Wednesday and began an extensive inspection of the premises. The search continued through the night and was underway for a second consecutive day on Thursday.

Officials are scrutinising the company’s documents, billing records and digital data related to financial transactions. Sources said the operation is being carried out following inputs suggesting possible large-scale tax evasion.

Navin Engineering is among the most prominent heavy machinery manufacturing units in the Surguja division. The company is engaged in the production of heavy industrial equipment, agricultural machinery and also supplies equipment to various government departments. It is also known for manufacturing the “Joy” electric bike.

According to information received by the GST department, the company allegedly understated the production cost of machines in its official records over a long period. It is suspected that this practice was used to reduce tax liability, prompting the department to initiate the search operation.

During the raid, GST officials examined purchase and sales invoices, accounting books and electronic records to verify discrepancies between declared figures and actual production. The prolonged duration of the search indicates a detailed reconciliation of documents is underway.

When approached by media persons, CGST officials described the action as a “routine procedure” and said they were collecting information related to certain tax-related aspects. They declined to comment further, stating that conclusions could only be drawn after the verification process is completed.

Officials said a clearer picture would emerge once the examination of records is finished. Any further action will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
