Chhattisgarh Band Sees Widespread Impact in Raigarh; Shops Remain Shut with Traders’ Body Support

Raigarh witnessed a strong impact of the Chhattisgarh Band on Wednesday, called by various social groups to protest an alleged incident of forced religious conversion and brutality against tribal people in Amabeda area of Kanker district.

Following the bandh call, most commercial establishments in the city remained closed since morning. In Raigarh’s busiest areas—including Subhash Chowk, Shyam Talkies Road, Station Road, Chakradhar Nagar Road and Dhimrapur Road—shops that usually open by 8–9 am stayed shut, reflecting the widespread response to the shutdown.

Members of different social organisations were seen moving across the city from early hours. However, there were no reports of coercion, disruption or untoward incidents. With the Chhattisgarh Chamber of Commerce extending support to the bandh, a large number of business establishments voluntarily remained closed.

Police on Alert

Providing details on the law-and-order situation, DSP Sushanto Banerjee said the police remained fully alert across the district. Senior officers along with police personnel continuously monitored the situation, while patrol vehicles conducted regular rounds. He confirmed that no unpleasant incidents were reported from any part of the city.

Chamber of Commerce Extends Support

Chhattisgarh Chamber of Commerce General Secretary Manish Udasi said that the bandh was called by various social groups, and the traders’ body decided to support it in the larger national interest. He clarified that the shutdown was peaceful and voluntary.

Udasi also stated that essential services were exempted from the bandh. Small traders, vendors dealing in perishable goods, and shops linked to essential services such as dairy outlets were allowed to operate normally.

Overall, Raigarh remained largely shut through the morning hours, underlining strong public sentiment over the Kanker incident, while authorities ensured normalcy and security throughout the district.
