Chhattisgarh migrant worker beaten to death in Kerala; RSS workers accused, Kerala minister calls it outcome of hate politics

The brutal killing of a migrant worker from Chhattisgarh in Kerala has sparked political controversy. On December 17, Ram Narayan Baghel, a resident of Sakti district in Chhattisgarh, was beaten to death by a mob after being mistaken for a Bangladeshi national.

Reacting to the incident, Chhattisgarh Health Minister Shyam Bihari Jaiswal said he was not aware of the case and had not read about it in the media. He stated that he would try to understand the matter.

The Congress party termed the incident extremely tragic and demanded strict punishment for the accused along with compensation of ₹1 crore for the victim’s family. State Congress communication department president Sushil Anand Shukla alleged that such incidents are a result of growing hatred in the country and called it unfortunate that even state ministers were unaware of the case.

Kerala minister M.B. Rajesh strongly condemned the mob lynching and said that five people have been arrested, four of whom are associated with the RSS. Speaking to ANI, he alleged that the victim fell prey to the hate-driven politics spread by the Sangh Parivar across the country. He also claimed that one of the accused had previously been involved in an attempt to murder a CPI(M) leader.

According to police, Ram Narayan was intoxicated at the time of the incident and was detained by locals in the Attappallam area on suspicion of theft. However, no stolen property was recovered from him. The post-mortem report revealed more than 80 injury marks on his body. He died due to severe head injuries and excessive bleeding.

A case has been registered at Valayar police station under Crime No. 975/2025 and Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The arrested accused have been identified as Murali, Prasad, Anu, Bipin, and Anandan. Police confirmed that the victim had no criminal history.

Family members alleged that they were not informed about his death in time. Initially, police only informed them that Ram Narayan was at the police station and asked them to arrive immediately. They later learned that he had already died. The deceased is survived by two sons aged 8 and 10.

The State Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of the incident and directed the Palakkad District Police Chief to submit a detailed report within three weeks.
