Chhattisgarh Olympic Association Seeks Hosting Rights for 40th National Games, Meets Union Sports Minister

The Chhattisgarh Olympic Association (COA) has formally urged the Union government to allot the 40th National Games to the state, proposing February 2028 as the tentative timeline. The request was made during a meeting between COA General Secretary Dr Vikram Singh Sisodia and Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr Mansukh Mandaviya in New Delhi.

During the interaction, Dr Sisodia thanked the Centre for approving the Khelo India Tribal Games for Chhattisgarh, describing it as a significant boost for grassroots sports and tribal talent in the state. He also briefed the minister on the current status of sports development, infrastructure expansion and athlete performance across disciplines in Chhattisgarh.

According to COA officials, Dr Sisodia highlighted the sustained efforts of the state government in strengthening the sports ecosystem. He noted that Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, who also serves as the President of the Chhattisgarh Olympic Association, has prioritised investment in stadiums, training centres and athlete welfare programmes, particularly in rural and tribal regions.

In the meeting, Dr Sisodia formally proposed that after the 39th National Games scheduled to be held in Meghalaya, the next edition be entrusted to Chhattisgarh. He argued that hosting the National Games would not only accelerate infrastructure development but also provide local athletes exposure to high-level competition on home ground.

“Chhattisgarh has emerged as a strong contender in several sports over the past decade. Hosting the National Games will further consolidate this progress and inspire a new generation of players,” Dr Sisodia reportedly told the minister.

Officials said the proposal outlined Chhattisgarh’s readiness in terms of venues, logistics and administrative coordination, citing existing facilities in Raipur, Bilaspur and other key cities, along with plans for upgrades where required. The COA also emphasised the state’s experience in hosting national-level tournaments in recent years.

Union Sports Minister Dr Mandaviya assured that the proposal would be examined in consultation with the Indian Olympic Association and other stakeholders. While no formal commitment was made, sources indicated that the Centre has taken note of Chhattisgarh’s growing role in national sports development.

If approved, the 40th National Games would mark the first time Chhattisgarh hosts the prestigious multi-sport event, potentially positioning the state as a major sporting hub in central India.
