Chhattisgarh Rain Alert: Thunderstorms and Strong Winds Forecast

Chhattisgarh rain alert issued for several districts as IMD warns of thunderstorms, lightning strikes and winds up to 50 kmph over the next three days.

A rain alert has been issued for several parts of Chhattisgarh, with the weather department warning of thunderstorms, lightning strikes and winds reaching up to 50 kmph over the next three days.

Rain Activity Likely Across State

Several districts of Chhattisgarh are expected to witness rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over the coming days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The weather agency has also warned of strong winds blowing at speeds of 40–50 kmph in different parts of the state, prompting authorities to advise residents to remain cautious during outdoor activities.

The alert comes as weather conditions continue to fluctuate across the region, bringing relief from intense heat in some areas while increasing the risk of storm-related incidents.

Raipur Under Weather Watch

In Raipur, partly cloudy skies are expected on Sunday with the possibility of rain, thunderstorms and dust storms during the day. Meteorologists have forecast a maximum temperature of around 38 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 27 degrees Celsius for the state capital.

Officials said changing atmospheric conditions could trigger sudden spells of rain and gusty winds, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours.

Fatal Incidents Amid Stormy Conditions

The weather warning follows a series of incidents linked to recent storms in the state.

In Korba district’s Lemru area, a tree reportedly fell on a couple during a storm on Friday. The couple had gone into a forested area searching for their missing goat when the incident occurred. The husband, identified as 54-year-old Shivratan Majhi, died on the spot, while his wife sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment.

The incident has once again highlighted the dangers posed by strong winds and falling trees during severe weather events.

Lightning Strike Claims Lives

In another tragedy, three people, including a deputy sarpanch, lost their lives after lightning struck villagers sheltering under a tree during a Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) work activity in Antagarh area of Kanker district.

Five others were injured in the incident and were shifted for medical treatment. Local authorities confirmed that the victims were caught in sudden thunderstorm activity while working outdoors.

Infrastructure Damage Reported

Recent storms have also caused significant damage to infrastructure in some districts.

A 131-foot-high BSNL communication tower collapsed in Bhediya Navagaon following strong winds and storm activity early Friday morning. Reports from the area indicate that more than 50 trees were uprooted, while at least 11 electricity poles were damaged, disrupting local services.

In Mungeli district, strong winds that swept through the area on Thursday evening reportedly tore off the roof structure of a liquor shop, illustrating the force of the gusts affecting several parts of the state.

Weather System Behind Change

Meteorologists attribute the ongoing weather activity to a trough system extending from central Pakistan to Bangladesh. The system passes through Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, northern Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and West Bengal, creating favourable conditions for rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning across central and eastern India.

According to weather experts, this system is expected to remain active for the next few days, sustaining rain-bearing conditions over Chhattisgarh.

Advisory for Residents

Authorities have urged people to avoid taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms and to stay indoors when lightning activity is reported. Farmers, labourers and those working in open areas have been advised to closely monitor weather updates.

With the Chhattisgarh rain alert remaining in effect, residents across vulnerable districts are being asked to remain vigilant as strong winds, lightning and intermittent rainfall continue to impact the state.
