Chhattisgarh ranks fifth nationwide in fertiliser black marketing, 294 notices issued in eight months

Chhattisgarh has ranked fifth in the country in cases related to fertiliser black marketing, hoarding and diversion, according to data presented by the Central government in the Lok Sabha. Between April 1 and November 28, 2025, action was taken against 294 fertiliser dealers in the state.

During this period, the licences of 13 dealers were cancelled, while four cases led to the registration of FIRs. The issue had also triggered heated debate during the Chhattisgarh Assembly’s monsoon session, with the opposition alleging shortages and large-scale hoarding affecting farmers.

As per the Central government’s data, Uttar Pradesh topped the list in overall action against fertiliser-related irregularities, including the highest number of notices, licence cancellations and FIRs. Rajasthan stood second, followed by Madhya Pradesh. Karnataka ranked fourth, while Chhattisgarh was placed fifth.

Rajasthan recorded the highest number of FIRs in fertiliser hoarding cases, while Maharashtra took the strongest action against poor-quality fertilisers. Madhya Pradesh emerged as the leading state in cases related to diversion and incorrect supply of fertilisers.

In Chhattisgarh, the fertiliser shortage also led to public protests. In September 2025, the Aam Aadmi Party staged demonstrations in Sakti district against alleged shortages and black marketing, prompting inspections by the agriculture department. Around the same time, farmers in Raigarh district took to the streets demanding adequate fertiliser supply, with the protests receiving support from the Congress party.
