Tragedy struck a prominent political family in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, on Monday, as a 20-year-old student, who was preparing for the highly competitive NEET exam, died by suicide. The incident has cast a spotlight on the immense academic pressure faced by young aspirants in India.
The deceased, identified as Sanskar Singh, was the son of builder Chitrasen Singh and the nephew of Congress leader Ajay Singh, a close associate of former minister Amarjeet Bhagat. According to police reports, the young man locked himself in his room on the second floor of his family home in the Rajkishore Nagar area around noon.
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Sanskar used a licensed 12-bore gun to take his own life. The family was alerted by the sound of the gunshot. Upon forcing their way into the locked room, they discovered him lying on the floor with a severe jaw injury.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Sanskar had been under severe psychological distress. Having passed his Class 12 examinations two years ago, he had been relentlessly preparing for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) to secure a seat in a medical college. He was currently residing in Bhopal for coaching classes and was scheduled to return there on the day of the incident.
“It is being suspected that he was in depression due to his repeated non-selection in the NEET exam,” a police official stated. The constant pressure to succeed in one of India's toughest entrance exams is believed to have taken a tragic toll on the young student.
Upon receiving the information, a police team led by Sarkanda TI Nilesh Pandey reached the spot. The body has been taken into custody for post-mortem, and a thorough investigation is underway to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to this extreme step. This devastating loss is a somber reminder of the critical need to address mental health issues and academic pressure among students.
