Cyclone ‘Ditwah’ Brings Rain Alert to Bastar; Cloudy Skies Likely, Temperature to Rise Slightly for Two Days
Digital Desk
The impact of Cyclone Ditwah, formed over the Bay of Bengal, is expected to bring light rain to parts of the Bastar region over the next two days. According to the Meteorological Department, several areas may experience cloudy weather, slowing the drop in winter temperatures. Active easterly and southerly winds are likely to increase moisture levels across the state.
Officials said minimum temperatures across Chhattisgarh may rise by 1°C to 3°C in the next 48 hours, after which a gradual decline is expected. In the past 24 hours, Durg recorded the state's highest temperature at 30.8°C, while Ambikapur logged the lowest at 8°C.
Meanwhile, the Health Department has issued an advisory warning that fluctuating temperatures may increase the risk of hypothermia, colds, and viral fevers. Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during cold waves and to wear adequate warm clothing when stepping outdoors.
Cold Conditions in Northern Chhattisgarh
Sarguja continues to reel under severe cold. Dense fog reduced visibility to nearly 100 metres in areas such as Wadrafnagar two days ago. In Pendra, villagers have begun relying on bonfires as temperatures dip sharply after sunset.
Historical Weather Patterns in November
Weather records show significant variations over the decades. On 2 November 1935, the highest-ever maximum temperature for the month—35.6°C—was recorded, while the coldest November night was logged on 22 November 1883, when temperatures fell to 8.3°C. November 1924 also marked the wettest spell with 138.2 mm rainfall, and 1930 holds the record for the highest single-day rain at 70.4 mm.
Rising Risk of Malaria
Experts warn that the current temperature pattern—warm days and cold nights—creates ideal conditions for mosquito breeding. Doctors advise using mosquito nets, ensuring no stagnant water collects around homes, covering drains, and wearing full-sleeved clothing, especially in the evenings.
With temperatures currently favourable for mosquito activity, malaria risk is expected to remain high in several rural and forested regions over the next week.
Tips to Boost Immunity in Winter
Doctors recommend steam inhalation for nasal congestion, salt-water gargles for sore throats, and including vitamin C–rich foods like citrus fruits and amla in daily diets. Ginger-basil tea or herbal decoctions can also help reduce symptoms of seasonal infections.
Overall, authorities urge residents to remain cautious as weather fluctuations continue and health risks rise.
