Cyclone ‘Ditwah’ Weakens; Cold Wave to Intensify in Chhattisgarh After Two Days
Digital Desk
Cyclone ‘Ditwah’, formed over the Bay of Bengal, has significantly weakened, though parts of the Bastar region may still receive light rain on Wednesday. The system’s diminishing impact means minimum temperatures across Chhattisgarh will remain largely unchanged for the next two days, after which a noticeable drop is expected.
According to the Meteorological Department, Durg recorded the state’s highest temperature at 29.4°C, while Ambikapur was the coldest at 10.4°C over the past 24 hours. Morning fog was reported in several northern districts, including Pendra, where the minimum temperature touched 11°C.
Health Advisory Issued
The Health Department has warned that fluctuating temperatures may lead to hypothermia, seasonal flu, and viral infections. Officials have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel during cold-wave conditions and step out only with adequate winter clothing.
Dense Fog and Early Winter Chill
Sarguja division continues to witness biting cold. Thick fog recently reduced visibility to just 100 metres in Wadrafnagar, while villagers in Pendra relied on bonfires to battle the chill.
Historical November Weather Records
Meteorological archives show wide variation in November weather patterns. The highest maximum temperature for the month—35.6°C—was recorded on 2 November 1935, while 22 November 1883 remains the coldest November night at 8.3°C. The heaviest rainfall for November occurred in 1924, with 138.2 mm recorded over the month. The wettest 24-hour spell was 70.4 mm on 2 November 1930.
Rising Malaria Risk
Experts caution that the current temperature range—warm days and cool nights—is favourable for mosquito breeding and may increase the risk of malaria transmission, especially in rural and forested belts. Doctors advise using mosquito nets, preventing water stagnation, wearing full-sleeved clothing in the evenings, and seeking immediate testing for fever, chills, or headaches.
Health professionals recommend simple preventive measures:
– Steam inhalation for nasal congestion
– Warm salt-water gargles for sore throat
– A Vitamin C–rich diet including citrus fruits and amla
– Tulsi-ginger tea or herbal decoctions to reduce cold symptoms and boost immunity
