Cyclone Motha Effect Fades in Chhattisgarh, Cold Weather to Intensify from Today

With the impact of Cyclone Motha finally subsiding, weather conditions across Chhattisgarh have begun to clear up. Apart from light drizzles in a few pockets, most regions witnessed dry weather on Sunday.

The Meteorological Department has predicted that over the next 48 hours, cold and dry winds will dominate, leading to a noticeable dip in night temperatures by 2–3 degrees Celsius.

Officials said the effect of moist winds from the sea has now diminished, while dry northeasterly winds have started flowing into the state. The department also confirmed that there is no chance of rainfall in the next seven days, and no weather alerts have been issued for today.

No Disruption During State Foundation Day Celebrations

On Saturday, the weather remained normal across the state. Except for mild cloud cover, no rainfall was recorded in Raipur, Bilaspur, or other major cities. This ensured that Chhattisgarh Rajyotsav celebrations continued smoothly without any weather-related hindrance.

Raipur recorded a minimum temperature of 23.9°C, which is 3 degrees above normal, while Bilaspur reported 23.7°C, about 4.3 degrees higher than usual. Minimum temperatures across the state remained between 18°C and 24°C, all slightly above average.

Farmers in Kawardha Face Crop Losses

Before the weather cleared, Cyclone Motha had caused heavy rainfall in several districts including Raipur, Kawardha, Bilaspur, Raigarh, and Surguja. In Kawardha, rain destroyed harvested crops lying in the fields. A distressed farmer reportedly collapsed after witnessing the damage to his produce.

In Bastar, standing crops were flattened while harvested paddy bags and grain heaps in fields were soaked and started rotting due to continuous rains.

Bridge Collapses in Kondagaon Due to Rain

In Adnar village of Kondagaon district, the Barko Nala bridge caved in due to incessant rain, completely disrupting local transportation. The bridge connects Lingopath–Mardapal–Bhatpal–Narayanpur road, a crucial route built under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana.

Authorities reported that one portion of the bridge collapsed first, and the pressure of water caused the remaining section to give way. Fortunately, no vehicle was crossing at the time of the collapse, averting a major tragedy.

October Records 59% Above-Normal Rainfall

Although the monsoon officially withdrew from Chhattisgarh by October 15, the state has continued to record post-monsoon rainfall. Between October 1 and 26, a total of 89.4 mm of rainfall has been recorded—59% higher than the seasonal average.
