A dispute over a ₹10 digital transaction fee escalated into a violent attack at an Aadhaar service center in Umarpoti village, police confirmed. The incident left the shop owner injured and has triggered a formal investigation under the Indian Penal Code.
According to police reports, 34-year-old Girdhar Lal Sahu, who operates Gajpal Kirana & Computer Work providing Aadhaar services in Umarpoti, filed a complaint at Uthai Police Station. Sahu stated that he charges a nominal fee of ₹10 per digital transaction, a standard practice for covering operational costs.
The confrontation occurred around 1:30 PM on January 20, when Dev Lal Tandon’s son visited the shop with his younger brother for a ₹200 digital transaction. Upon being informed of the ₹10 service charge, the customer allegedly became agitated, verbally abusing Sahu.
The situation escalated when the younger Tandon reportedly climbed onto the counter and struck Sahu on the back of the head with a metal bracelet, causing a head injury that resulted in bleeding. Outside the shop, his companion allegedly picked up a stone and threatened Sahu with further violence. Following the attack, both assailants fled the scene.
Sahu sought immediate medical attention at Uthai Hospital before filing the police complaint. Witnesses Channu Nishad and Shyam Ratan Gajpal corroborated Sahu’s account of the attack.
Uthai Police have registered a case under sections 296 (voluntarily causing hurt), 351(3) (assault), 115(2), and 3(5) of the IPC and are in the process of recording statements and identifying the accused for further legal action. A senior officer confirmed that preliminary investigations are underway and assured strict enforcement of the law.
This incident highlights growing tensions surrounding digital payment fees in rural areas, where small service charges can trigger disputes. Experts warn that while digital transactions are encouraged for transparency and efficiency, awareness campaigns and clear communication about service charges are essential to prevent conflicts.
The police have appealed to the public to maintain restraint in disputes and report incidents without resorting to violence. The case continues to develop as authorities work to apprehend the perpetrators.
