A shocking incident surfaced at Vandana Primary School in Manpat block, Sarguja district, Chhattisgarh, where a teacher reportedly arrived at school under the influence of alcohol. The incident, caught on video, has sparked concern within the education department. In the footage, the teacher admits to drinking alcohol and is seen performing squats and push-ups in the school premises. The department has ordered an immediate inquiry into the matter.
According to reports, teacher Raj Pratap Singh, posted at Vandana Primary School, arrived at the school on Friday while intoxicated. On the day of the incident, the school headmistress was on leave, and another teacher was absent, leaving the responsibility of primary classes on Singh.
Locals stated that the teacher appeared disoriented and could not speak coherently. Concerned villagers informed local journalists, who visited the school and found the teacher visibly drunk. Singh admitted to drinking alcohol during interactions with journalists.
In the video, the teacher is seen saying that he consumed “half a glass of local liquor for just 20 rupees.” Acknowledging his mistake, he attempted to punish himself by performing physical exercises in front of the students. The entire incident was recorded on camera and later went viral on social media.

Vandana Primary School has over 60 enrolled students, although attendance was reportedly low on that day. Even so, the teacher’s presence in an intoxicated state during school hours is being treated as a serious breach of discipline.
Manpat Block Education Officer (BEO) Yogesh Shahi confirmed the teacher’s alcohol consumption as seen in the video. He stated that a report would be sent to senior authorities and strict departmental action would follow. “Such incidents tarnish the credibility of the education system,” Shahi added.
The BEO also noted that Singh had previously faced complaints regarding alcohol consumption, for which a notice had been issued. At the time, he had assured authorities of corrective behavior, but the recent incident has raised serious doubts about his reliability.
The education department has initiated a preliminary investigation. Based on video evidence, villagers’ statements, and prior records, further action, including possible suspension, is under consideration.
The incident has once again sparked debate over discipline, supervision, and accountability of teachers in government schools.
