A late-evening fire at a government school in Durg damaged the principal office, while key student records were safely recovered
A fire broke out in a government school in Durg’s Potia Kala area on Friday night, damaging furniture and materials inside the principal’s office but sparing critical documents linked to students, officials said.
The incident, reported around 8:45 pm, led to brief panic in the locality before fire personnel brought the situation under control. No injuries were reported.
Fire Late Evening
According to initial information, flames were first noticed emerging from the principal’s room of the school located under the Padmanabhpur police station limits. Locals in the vicinity spotted smoke and alerted the Durg fire control room without delay.
A firefighting unit was dispatched soon after the call came in, reaching the spot within minutes.
Swift Response Prevents Spread
When firefighters entered the premises, the principal’s office was already filled with dense smoke and visible flames. The team moved quickly to contain the fire before it could spread to adjoining classrooms or administrative areas.
Officials said the timely intervention played a crucial role in limiting the damage.
“The fire was confined to one room. It could have spread further if there was any delay,” a local official familiar with the response said.
Principal Office Damaged
While the broader school structure remained unaffected, items inside the principal’s cabin were partially destroyed. Furniture and some office materials were reduced to ashes.
However, officials confirmed that essential government files and student-related records were either untouched or successfully retrieved during the operation.
This, they noted, prevented a potentially serious administrative setback.
Documents Remain Safe
Fire personnel reportedly prioritised the safety of official records stored inside the room. Despite the challenging conditions, including heavy smoke, they managed to secure key documents in time.
Authorities said this helped avert complications related to academic and administrative processes.
Cause Still Unclear
The exact cause of the fire remains unknown at this stage. No immediate signs of electrical short circuit or foul play have been officially confirmed.
“Further investigation is underway to determine how the fire started,” officials said, adding that a detailed assessment would follow.
Fire Team Effort
The firefighting operation was carried out under the guidance of district fire officer Nagendra Kumar Singh. The on-ground team, led by station in-charge Mahendra Chandel, included personnel identified as Hiramann, Rajesh, Kamlesh and Tameshwar.
Their coordinated effort ensured the flames were brought under control without escalation.
Investigation Ahead
Following the incident, concerned departments have been alerted and are expected to conduct a technical inspection of the site. Preventive measures, including checks on electrical wiring and storage practices, may also be reviewed.
The government school fire in Durg has once again raised questions around fire preparedness in public institutions, especially during non-working hours when response time becomes critical.
