Durg Police Induct Two Advanced Drones for Surveillance and Crowd Control; Marks a Step Toward Smart Policing

In a significant move toward modern policing, Durg Police have introduced two state-of-the-art surveillance drones capable of monitoring areas up to five kilometers. Officials say Durg is likely the first district in Chhattisgarh to establish its own dedicated police drone unit.

These small and mid-range drones will assist in crowd management, traffic monitoring, search operations, and disaster response. Equipped with 4K zoom-lens cameras, the drones can capture clear visuals from height, enabling precise surveillance of large gatherings or sensitive areas. Their flight duration ranges between 25 and 55 minutes, depending on the model and battery capacity.

The drones can carry payloads up to 25 kilograms, making them suitable for deploying supplies, searchlights, or tactical equipment. They feature low-noise operation, encrypted communication, and an automatic return-to-home system in case of low battery or signal loss. Built to endure harsh weather, they can function in temperatures from –10°C to +50°C and come with IP65-rated protection.

Inspector General (IG) Ramgopal Garg stated that the primary goal of deploying these drones is to improve situational awareness before ground deployment, strengthen crime prevention, and enhance crowd control operations. He added that adopting advanced technology would help police respond faster and detect incidents more effectively.

During the live demonstration, IG Garg, SP Vijay Agrawal, and other senior officers, including DSP Chandraprakash Tiwari and Dr. Sankalp Roy, were present.

Meanwhile, senior officers from Durg have also undergone anti-drone training at IIT Ropar and BPR&D, Punjab, where they learned techniques to identify, disable, and neutralize suspicious drones — a move seen as crucial for Naxal-affected regions and sensitive security zones.

Officials believe the integration of drone technology will significantly enhance crime surveillance, emergency response, and public safety, marking a new era of high-tech policing in Chhattisgarh.
