EC Cracks Down on 345 Inactive Political Parties

The Election Commission has issued notices to 345 political parties, including those in Chhattisgarh, for remaining inactive for over six years. The move aims to ensure transparency and accountability in the political landscape.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has started the process of major action against 345 registered uncertified political parties (RUPPs) across the country. According to the Commission, these parties have not participated in any election during the last six years from the year 2019 and no active office of theirs has been found.

The Election Commission has taken steps towards removing all such parties from the list and has directed the Chief Electoral Officers of the concerned states to take necessary action. Under this, many political parties have also been identified in Chhattisgarh, which are being given an opportunity to be heard by issuing show cause notices.

After the hearing process, the Chief Electoral Officer of Chhattisgarh will send a report to delist these parties to the Election Commission. The final decision will be taken by the Election Commission of India.

It is done under Section 29A of the Act, 1951. Under this provision, any association enjoys certain privileges like tax exemption once it is registered as a political party.

The Election Commission says that reviewing registered unrecognised political parties is a routine process. It is the Commission's priority to maintain the transparency and credibility of the electoral system by de-listing parties that are inactive, non-existent or involved in fraudulent activities. This move will also ensure that registration of political parties is restricted to only legitimate political activities and is not misused.
