ED Raids Nine Locations in Chhattisgarh Over Bharatmala Land Compensation Scam

The Enforcement Directorate on Monday conducted searches at nine premises in Raipur and Mahasamund districts as part of a money laundering probe into alleged irregularities in land acquisition compensation for the Raipur-Visakhapatnam economic corridor under the Bharatmala Pariyojana.

Teams targeted residences linked to land broker Harmit Singh Khanuja in Raipur's upscale Law Vista colony in Amlidih and businessman Jasbir Singh Bagga in Mahasamund's Megh Basant area. Operations, backed by security forces, began around 6 am and focused on Khanuja, his associates, certain government officials, and landowners.

The case stems from claims of manipulated records, fake partitions, and backdated mutations that inflated compensation from an estimated Rs 29.5 crore to over Rs 70 crore in areas like Abhanpur's Naikbandha and Urla villages. State investigators earlier pegged losses at Rs 32-43 crore, leading to chargesheets against 10 people, including Khanuja.

Chhattisgarh's Economic Offences Wing had arrested Khanuja and others in April, uncovering collusion with revenue officials to siphon funds via proxy accounts.

Bharatmala, a flagship central scheme, aims to develop 26,000 km of economic corridors to boost freight movement and connectivity.

The ED's involvement signals deeper scrutiny into potential proceeds of crime, building on prior suspensions of officials like former SDM Nirbhay Sahu.

Searches continued late into the day, with authorities tight-lipped on recoveries.
