A 79-year-old man died in hospital five days after a speeding car struck him in Durg district's Jamul police area, police reported.
M. Munnu Swami, a resident of Housing Board Bhilai, passed away on December 30 at 1:55 pm while undergoing treatment at BSP Sector-9 Hospital. The accident occurred on December 25 around 10:45 am. Swami was returning home on his Luna moped (registration CG07H9865) from Ghasidas Society when a car (CG07CZ3797) approaching from Ekta Chowk hit him.
Police cited reckless driving as the cause. Swami suffered severe internal head injuries and a serious wound to his right leg. Bystanders rushed him to the hospital, where doctors described his condition as critical from the start.
After nearly five days of intensive care, he succumbed. Hospital authorities informed police, who registered a death case and conducted a panchnama. Jamul police filed charges against the unidentified driver under Section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (causing death by negligence) and Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act (dangerous driving).
Officers have identified the driver and launched an investigation. Further action awaits the post-mortem report and additional evidence. The incident highlights ongoing road safety concerns in the industrial twin cities of Durg-Bhilai, where rash driving frequently endangers vulnerable road users like pedestrians and two-wheeler riders.
